Thanks for purchasing your new Alternative Concepts Pelican Tank! The following information will help you get the most from your purchase and prolong the life of your investment. Please also note the important advice about the safe installation and use of your Pelican Tank.

Features: Customising Your Tank
Pelican Tanks have been designed with flexibility in mind. If you are not happy with the fittings supplied, you can easily customise your purchase with readily available off-the-shelf PVC tank fittings to enhance your product and make it more useful to a variety of applications, whether that be using it for transporting water, connecting to pumps, or installing it as a tank collect waste water. The 100mm sleeve  opening has been designed to allow flexibilty of use, and allows arm access inside of the tank for connecting additional fittings. The opening closes off with a draw-string and cord lock, but can also be tied off more securely simply by folding it over and securing it with the cord or a plastic cable tie.

Installation
Pelican Tanks can also be permanently plumbed to water inlet pipes of varying diameter. You may choose this option if you intend to use your tank beside a shed to catch rainwater run-off, or if you want to install it under a house for waste-water recycling. We strongly recommend that you use a qualified plumber. Click here for for some plumbing suggestions and guidelines

If connecting Pelican Tanks to existing drain pipes, make sure that adequate amounts of suitable sealant are used within the sleeve and a pipe clamp is firmly attached around the outside of the sleeve. It is also imperative that you provide an overflow so that your tank does not become pressurised and burst! A burst or leaking tank can cause serious damage to property, and even be dangerous. Normally a 'T' fitted to the inlet pipe just before the sleeve opening will suffice for an overflow. You should also make sure that your tank is clear of any electrical wires of devices that could be damaged in the event of a water leak. At no point should you ever attempt to pressurise or overfill your Pelican Tank.

Location
No matter which model of Pelican Tank you have purchased, careful consideration should be given to the location and installation. You need to make sure that your tank is clear of sharp objects, such as sticks and rocks, and that it is well clear of all electrical sources. If you are installing the Pelican Tank in contact with the ground, such as in a garden setting or under a house, we strongly advise that you 'build a nest' for your Pelican. Anything that you can do to provide a barrier between the environment and the tank will prolong the life of your investment and preserve it from degradation.

Building a Nest: We suggest that you provide a smooth base of sand and clear the area immediately around the tank of any objects which could puncture or damage the tank. The area should be level, free of rock, sticks and thorns. If you are installing the tank on sloping ground you should build a retainer around it. Preferably your location should also be shaded. Pelican Tanks are UV resistant, but the more protection you can provide, the longer it will last.

Mk2 Trailer Tank:
Important Safety Advice

If you are using your Pelican Tank in a trailer or utility vehicle, please observe the following safety precautions:

  • Always Secure your Load!
You should take all sensible precautions when using your Pelican Tank in a vehicle. A full Pelican Tank will provide a more stable load in transit than a half empty tank. Partially empty tanks can 'roll' out of the vehicle if not secured well. We strongly recommend that you use a covered trailer or a tarpaulin and additional ropes to secure your load. Using a tarpaulin and additional ropes will also protect your tank against wear and tear (scuffing) and sharp objects.
  • Never Exceed the Load Limit of your Trailer of Vehicle!
Water weighs 1kg per litre. A standard 6'x4' trailer has a volume of approximately 650 litres, therefore 650 litres = 650kg. The Pelican Tank will hold even more than 650 litres due to the 'bulge factor' with bladder tanks, so care needs to be taken to not exceed your weight limit. Check with your vehicle and trailer manufacturer for information on maximum load capacity.
  • Excercise Extreme Care when Travelling!
When carting water, travel carefully and allow a longer stopping distance due to the additional weight you are carrying. The Pelican Tank was originally intended for on-farm use and we do not recommend that you use the Pelican Tank to carry liquids over long distances.
  • Never Carry Hazardous Liquids!
Never attempt to carry liquids by road that could be damaging to the road surface or hazardous to other road users in the event of a leak.
  • Protect your Tank!
Laying tarpaulins inside your trailer or utility can provide additional protection for your Pelican Tank. If you are using your Pelican Tank in a fire-fighting situation, we recommend that you cover the tank with a wet blanket to prevent damage from burning embers.
