Drought Forces Change, Brings OpportunityThe Australian drought, although devastating to many farmers, is bringing about a much-needed transformational change in the attitudes and general water -consciousness of many Australian city dwellers. In the past, farmers have endured the periodic onset of drought whilst urban Australians went on their merry way oblivious to the hardships in the bush. But stage three water restrictions has changed all that. With city people unable to even water their gardens or wash their cars with hoses, they have sadly watched their lawns dry up and their gardens wilt. In the driest continent on earth, it has taken drastic water restrictions to bring about the behavioural changes that are needed to conserve a very precious commodity. City people are now taking shorter showers and bucketing their used bath water onto their gardens in an effort to keep things alive. But with drought or any misfortune, their are always business opportunities for those who are prepared to recognise them. Tank sales are up and retail stores are struggling to keep up with demand. Innovative water-saving products are appearing on the market and being snapped up because people finally realise that even when the drought breaks, we need to learn to manage our water much more wisely and practice better water conservation in the long term.
